Swim Lessons for All, Tennis Lessons for Morgan, Running Love, and Summer Date Nights

The very first week school was out we hit the summer running with swim lessons for all the kids, and tennis lessons for Morgan.

They all did really well!  Their instructors were all so darling and fun.  I truly think the personality of the person teaching the kids these things makes all the difference!  If they are knowledgeable and easy-going the kids have a great time.  If they are easily annoyed by the learning curve of children or short attention spans then it is just miserable for all.  This year we lucked out big time!  I am so grateful because it also seems to affect their view of the sport they are learning as well.  Swim and tennis lessons are officially over now, but they are two fun, active sports that we will be doing as a family for the rest of the summer. :)

Another sport we like around here is running. We like it a lot actually. :)  Summer running is the best.  Warm sun, open road or trails, training plans for races, the high of a great run, and the energy and confidence you feel throughout your day knowing that you ran.  LOVE!  This year, Trev and I are doing marathons.  Trev did the Ogden Marathon back in May.  He ran it with his brother, Rich.  It rained the entire time, but those guys sure did well, finishing around 3:50.  A great time!  Epsecially in the pouring rain! :)

This is how we cheered him on from the comfort of our warm office. :)

The kids even are beginning to run around here.  Here they are at their school's 5K.  Jake was one of the first ones to finish in the school!  He is so athletic, just like his dad.

Morgan runs like me.  For fun and with uplifting friends.  We are athletic as well, but more on the social side. :)

I am currently training to run the St. George marathon in October.  I have loved the training so far!  It is so fun to have a hard goal your working towards.  Even on those mornings when I don't feel like getting up, I NEVER regret going running.  It fuels my whole day.  Like I said, we love running around here.  Lately I have been taking the kids running with me on my shorter runs.  I run, they either ride in the stroller, scooter, or rip-stick.  It is so neat to be out doing this with them and encouraging them to be active and enjoy exercise.  Something that took me into adulthood before I really liked it. :)  Hopefully this will give them a head-start. :)

Another one of my favorite things that we do is Date Night.  Kid's date night, and our date night.  Each Thursday, either Trev or I will take on of the kids on a date.  Just a little one-on-one time.  It is so neat to get them alone.  I feel like these dates help us to get to know them as individuals so much better.  They love it, we love it.  Yesterday I went with Claire.  We rode the electric scooter down to the Johnny Rockets by our house, split a S'mores shake, and did a little shopping.  She was so cute and fun to be with, and I am sure we were quite a sight on that little scooter together. :)  How I adore my Claire-Bear.

For our last couple date night, Trev and I went to Blue Lemon for dinner, and then to the Utah County Parade of Homes where I found the house I want to move into.

Too bad I don't have $600,000 plus the lot premium to spend on it. :)  Shoot.

But it was super fun to get see all the houses anyway.  So many new designs, color schemes, and beautiful workmanship.  You can't help but be in awe.  We hope to see some more this weekend. :)

When it is all said and done however, I don't even care what we do as long as Trev and I get a little time just for each other.  We were told when we first got married to go on a date together each week.  Even when it is hard.  So we have made that a priority in our marriage and it is truly a treasure to me.  If he or I have had a difficult week, or even if we haven't, the time where we just get to be alone together strengthens our relationship so much!

I sure love this handsome, sweet, hard-working, kind man of mine.

Now to start planning a great Father's Day for him.  He is the BEST father, and boy are we going to treat him this Sunday. :)

It's about time!

This little man has been waiting for this moment for a long, LONG time.  Ever since Kindergarten when other kids' teeth started falling out, and the Tooth Fairy started showering them with cash, he has looked forward to this moment.  Fast forward to now...he just turned 7 and finished 1st grade.  And it FINALLY happened!  Jakester lost his 1st tooth!!!  The Tooth Fairy came!!!  Big deal folks! :)

The girls rolled out of bed to see what all the fuss was about...they wake up in the morning like me...S-L-O-W-L-Y. :)

Congrats bud...my baby boy is growing up.

Make it Monday and a Birthday Boy

Summer has started, and the Annual Lighten Adventure Camp has begun.

The basic run down of what we are doing is this.

Each day we all (the kids and I) have daily jobs we need to do.
The categories of jobs are: Reading, Writing, Practice, Home/Zone, and Physical.

Once those are completed for the day, we have a fun theme for each day that we do something in.

Make-it Monday
Take-A-Trip Tuesday
Wet Wednesday
Thinking Thursday
Friend/Family Friday

(for more info on this go to www.powerofmoms.com)

No I did not come up with this all on my own. Wish I had though. :)

As I approached this summer, I wanted it to be fun.  Carefree.  Relaxing.

But I also wanted us accomplishing.  Growing. Progressing.  Learning.

So back in May, Trev and I went for a walk.  We talked about all our kids individually, and what we thought their strengths were, and what are some things they could work on.

It was so helpful to have both our opinions on this because my husband recognized things I hadn't and vice versa.  Involving each other and working as a team helps so much.

So the themed-days were determined by those things we discussed.

I felt so ready!

Then summer hit.  Camp was underway.  We were having some success, however, it wasn't easy finding the balance between fun, carefree, and relaxing vs. working hard, learning, growing.

It was hard.  But I am happy to say that on Monday I had an "AH-HA" day!

It was Make-it Monday.  I have to say this is one that in the past I have let slide by because I am not super-into-crafting.  I kind of like it, but don't like that the projects don't usually turn out like I want, and because it usually involves more messes.  Something I don't love either.

But this year I decided I needed to make this day a priority.  Why?

Because my sweet ML IS super-into-crafting.  She loves it actually.  She is such a creative mind.  She is talented at it too!  Her stuff turns out great!  This special strength of hers must have come from Trev's side.  They are super-crafty-crafters!  Especially with fabric.

So it may come as no suprise that the favorite Lighten craft usually involves sewing.  ML has been begging me lately to sew.

So this Make-it Monday we sewed!  Thanks to my dear friend Michelle and her daughter Olivia, sharing their talents and supplies with us.  ML made an uber-cute skirt! Then my friend made her a bracelet to go with it, and curled her hair.  I helped the girls with whatever I could and took pictures...something I am good at.  A craft that I enjoy. :)  The younger ones just played on the slip-and-slide for about 1000 hours straight.

What a great time we had!

The best part for me was seeing one of my daughter's strengths truly being nurtured.  I LOVE that she loves to create.  Even if it is in a way that is different from me.  I saw my daughter's potential.  Who she is.  What she is becoming.  And I could not have been prouder.  Perhaps this is something we can learn together.  Seeing her love for it, made me enjoy it so much more.

Who knows, maybe she might just pass on the Lighten seamstress talent to me. :)

Sure love this girl and had a great day crafting with her and amazing friends.

After the sewing-fest, we came home, grabbed a quick bite to eat, and headed to this amazingly fun, and beautiful park in Alpine for my nephew, Preston's birthday party.  They live in Idaho so we don't often get to celebrate birthdays with those little guys.  I wish I had taken more pictures of them, but my camera battery died about half-way through the party. :(

But here is what I got at least.

How blessed I am to be in such a fun and loving family.  Sure love the Lightens!

Happy Birthday big boy!

Here's to more Make-it Mondays. :)

Summer is the best!
