Big Moments, Big Ties, and the "Big" Talk

We had a big weekend.  Not busy, just one filled with big moments in life.

In our house, turning 8 is a big deal!  Big "friend" parties are thrown, BIG decisions are made, and our kids get the "Big Talk" about where they came from. ;)

These big moments take a lot of preparation and thought; which makes them even more grand!

Well this year, we have one turning 8.

And boy, are we excited for the him!

His birthday isn't until May, but this weekend I could start to feel the anticipation of the big things to come creeping in.  You see, his best buddy in the whole world, Luke Maughan, hit that big 8 birthday and made the big decision to get baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (lds.org).  We could not be more proud of him and you can bet we were going to be there to support him! :)

And as I said before, big moments take preparation.  This became the day that Jake took the big step of learning how to tie a BIG boy tie from his father.

Talk about a big moment!

The little girls and I watched and waited for the end result.

Not to shabby right??  Is this kid getting big or what?!

Here he is in support of his buddy.

He even managed to weasel his way into the program by offering to recite the 4th Article of Faith from memory.  Yeah, he didn't know it.  So he read it instead. :)

These boys warm my mother's heart.

In a few months, my big boy will have to make this big decision as well.  Right now, one of his goals is to learn about Baptism to prepare for it.  More on that to come.

This weekend and realizing how big Jake is getting, reminded me that Trev and I do the "Big" sex talk with our kids when they are 8 and we need to start preparing for that too.

We did this with Morgan back when she turned 8 and here is a picture story about how it went.

It took me this long to get her to agree to post these pictures.  She turns 10 this month. :)

My favorite moments of the night were when she was reading this book and kept saying, "Ewww!" and "That is the grossest illustration I have ever seen!"

We all laugh A LOT and left the Big Talk feeling great about it!  So glad we had that discussion because it gave us a way to explain intimacy in the context we wanted her to understand it, as opposed to the context she would hear about it from the world, media, or friends.

It also created an atmosphere where she knows, hey, if we can talk about this, we can talk about anything!  The trust level between us jumped about 50 notches that day.

Such a grand big moment.

Jake is up next to have his big 8 birthday - which will entail lots of big moments.

How fun it is to be a mother of "getting big" kids.

How I adore them. :)
