Each year, on July 24th, we honor the pioneers who gave up so much for the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. (I'm a Mormon. www.lds.org)
Those brave souls crossed the plains, leaving everything they had and knew behind. Sometimes even their families. Many died. All sacrificed. All so that their children (us) could have everything we do.
It is only appropriate to honor them.
We also honor pioneers today. Those who continue to pave the way for others to follow. Often times at great personal expense.
Pioneer Day to me is about honoring those pioneers of the past and present - in addition to encouraging myself and family to be pioneers of the future. To be that one that sacrifices to open the way for others to follow. There are many ways to do this.
Here are a few ideas:
1. Speak up! In today's world, those promoting truth and traditional values are told to be silent. Those who promote evil are often celebrated. Don't let the world silence you!! Or your children!! Teach them to speak up and let them see you do it!
2. Use social media to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ. It is easier today than it ever has been to share our feelings and thoughts. Don't waste the precious time you have to share your testimonies of the restored gospel. People are reading and listening to everything you say, and don't say. Make sure you say it!
3. Be the example to follow. Live your life exemplary so that others will want to emulate it. Stand up for truth. Don't be afraid. Be kind. Be compassionate. Show the world who Jesus Christ is through your righteous example to others. They are watching!!! Always watching! Give them something to see.
How grateful I am for the pioneers. All those before, now, and tomorrow!
I will try to be one of them.
To celebrate we went up into nature with our friends. Some of the very mountains those early Saints crossed.
We ate dutch oven dinners, fished, played, explored, ate cobbler and smores, and then went home and lit sparklers!
How I love Pioneer Day!

A Trip to Temple Square and City Creek
One of the things on my bucket list this summer was to take my kids downtown to Temple Square.
Every time I go there I just feel the Spirit so strong. I wanted my kids to feel it too, so we went one afternoon. How glad I am that we did. We had a great time, and I think (or hope) that they felt the Spirit and their testimonies grew. I know I did.
To finish out the adventure in style we got treats at Deseret Book, played in the fountains at City Creek Mall, and hunted for fish in the stream. We left soaked to the bone, but spiritually fed.
Is there anything more one can ask for summertime?
